Columbia University professor, podcast host, and Atlantic Magazine editor Dr. John McWhorter clearly loves language and the sociology of language. His written essays on linguistics can be found in many publications, but his recorded conversations and videos are quite valuable also. His 2016 TEDTalk on learning a new language has been viewed over three million times, and for good reason.
In just over ten minutes, McWhorter eloquently and engagingly encourages his native English-speaking viewers to consider the benefits of learning another language. Even though English is growing in prominence and usage, there are still many reasons to learn another or several languages, which McWhorter consolidates into four main reasons. This is a great TED Talk for older elementary school students, school board members, faculty meetings, and other gatherings, as all will leave thinking more about language.
