Five-Part Series on ELLs Concludes: Learning with Larry Ferlazzo

Larry Ferlazzo, an award-winning English and Social Studies teacher at Luther Burbank High School in California and author of Helping Students Motivate Themselves: Practical Answers To Classroom Challenges and The ESL/ELL Teacher’s Survival Guide, recently completed his five-part series about English Language Learners on Education Week.

As we have written about before, each publication of Ferlazzo’s series begins with a posed question to which educators from all walks of life can answer, bringing their personal or academic experiences to the discussion. Each week, Ferlazzo asks a new bunch of educators: How do you promote speaking with English-language learners?

For Part Five, this question is answered by Sonia Soltero, Kevin Jepson, Susan Gaer, Michele L. Haiken, Sarah Thomas, and Gloria Pereyra-Robertson, all of whom have a background in DL or ELL education. If you are interested in multiple possible answers to this question from these educators, please find the complete article here.

Part Two: ‘Promoting Speaking for ELLs Must Be Intentional’

Part Three: Promote Speaking With ELLs Through ‘Community, Conversations, and Celebrations’

Part Four: ‘Planning, Scaffolds & Time’ Are Needed to Support Speaking With ELLs

Because there are so many varied responses from esteemed educators on this one question, all educators will find a method (or several methods) to effectively practice the promotion of speaking for English Language Learners in the classroom.
